George
| After 40 years in the ragtrade George Spyrou stands alone, there are few that survive this industry with the impact and success George has had in the past years. At age 15 George walked into a job as a cutter for a clothing manufacturer, an unlikely choice for the local Redfern boy amongst his friends. Whilst learning his trade as a cutter George attended college to learn the art of pattern-making. Young fresh and eager George knew he was on the road to success in the fashion world. In his early twenties George and a partner set up a woman’s shirt label –‘Jugs’. Ten years later George set up a company with Stuart Membery, which lasted 4 years before finally launching his own woman’s, label GS. GS was the springboard for George into the larger fashion arena; between the years of 1985- 1998 George introduced many new woman’s brands into the Australian market. Until finally in 1998 amalgamating them under one roof and calling them simply ‘George’. The label ‘George’ is designed for a modern woman covering all aspects of everyday life, she is ageless in her mind, fashion savvy, likes to look after herself and wants quality with price in mind. The ‘George’ design team opt for basics which can take you from the office to the cocktail party- a co-ordinates range where George says ‘that he no longer designs but rather sees what’s missing.’ George is the eye, the link between the creative team and the business team, he is able to fill in the gaps, and let his consumers have the trends of the overall market at competitive prices. In the past 18 months George has opened 5 retail outlets in NSW, and wholesales nationally to speciality stores. George Spyrou has been a major key in the mould of the Australian Fashion Industry, a player over the last 40 years and one ready to continue in this fast and furious world of fashion. |
